Lawrence Taylor has an education background that includes the University of California at Berkeley (1996) and the UCLA School of Law (1969). After earning his degree, Taylor held positions as deputy district attorney, deputy county counsel, and deputy public defender in Los Angeles, California. Since 1979, Taylor has been in private practice. His current DUI law firm holds 8 offices spread through California and Nevada. All 11 attorneys involved with the firm specialize in DUI defense.
Known by his colleagues across the country as the “Dean of DUI Attorneys”, Taylor has received the “AV” ranking (distinguished in ability and ethics) by the Martindale-Hubble International Law Directory.
While Lawrence Taylor specializes in drunk driving defense, his experience includes a wide range of topics. In the Onion Field murder case, Taylor served as the defense counsel before the California Supreme Court. He was the judge’s legal advisor in People vs. Charles Manson. Taylor has also served as an independent Special Prosecutor to conduct a grand jury investigation of governmental corruption, appointed directly by the Attorney General of Montana. Taylor also has experience in teaching at Gonzaga University School of Law in Spokane, Washington and Osaka University in Japan. He was appointed “Professor of the Year” at Gonzaga and later “Fulbright Professor of Law” at Osaka. The Pepperdine University of Law School also invited Taylor as the Visiting Professor. Later, the Regents of National College for DUI Defense was founded by Taylor and ten of his colleagues who are in the nation’s top DUI defense lawyers. Now a group of over 800 members, Taylor was appointed as its first Dean.
Over the last 25 years, Lawrence Taylor has lectured in 38 states on the topics of trial tactics and techniques. Over the past 35 years, he has written 15 books on DUI litigation and 30 articles in various publications. These include, California Drunk Driving Defense (3rd edition), and Drunk Driving Defense (6th edition). Publications like the Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, USA Today, People Magazine, Lawyer’s Weekly USA, and The National Law Journal have featured him, and he has spoken on various television shows. Taylor is Board certified as a DUI defense specialist, an accomplishment only four attorneys in California hold. For all of his accomplishments, Taylor has been chosen for many awards, including being named in Who’s Who in American Law, as well as being given the “Lifetime Achievement Award” by Harvard Law School (2002).
